and today it did. I sort of have a reputation for having, um, shall we say, a lead foot. Fine, I'll admit it, I speed. If I am going to be perfectly honest I should say that 60 in a 55 is not at all uncommon for me, 65 in a 55 is probably more accurate, however. I have never gotten a speeding ticket. I have been pulled over a few times for speeding but in the past it worked to bat my eyelashes and look innocent. Always drove away with nothing more than a warning. Until today. Today I got pulled over by a woman. As soon as she stepped out of the car I figured batting my eyelashes would have zero effect whatsoever. I figured right.
In my defense, I didn't know the speed limit. I was on a road I had never traveled on before. I don't even know how fast I was going for sure, to tell the truth. My best guess is that I was probably doing at least 55 mph. I saw the sign stating the speed limit as 30 mph at the same time I saw the cop car. I slammed on the brakes but it was already too late. She whipped around, turned on her lights and that was the end of that. I didn't argue. Didn't try to defend myself by explaining that I didn't know the speed limit. There have been so many times that I should have had a ticket and didn't even get pulled over, I was just glad she wrote the ticket for 45 mph instead of the 55 mph I was more likely going.
I realized today that speeding is something I'm not even aware of most of the time. After being handed the ticket, I had lunch with my family and started down the road to home again. A few miles into my drive I looked down and realized I was going 65 in a 55! I decided that it would probably be safer for me to start driving with the cruise control on. Although, I couldn't bring myself to actually set it to 55. I set it at 59. After all, you can't teach an old dog new tricks cold turkey!
